Caldwell family papers, 1818-1861.

A collection of letters, mostly orders from the Navy Department, describing the professional history of two generations of Caldwells. Charles H. Caldwell and Charles H.B. Caldwell both served with the United States Navy. The orders denote the various voyages the men were part of and where they were living when on shore. A handwritten family history is included as well. Charles H.B. Caldwell was appointed a Midshipman in 1838. In 1851 he became a Master in the following year a Lieutenant . Included is a letter Lieutenant Caldwell sent James Dobbin, Secretary of the Navy, requesting he be able to sail to the Mediterranean if his services were not needed for a trip to the Arctic.
